Current Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchoine is the highest blogger, sports-related or otherwise, in the United States, MySA.com reports. His blog, “VIP Connection,” while sparsely read, managed to receive donations to support it’s upkeep conservatively placed at $140,000.
His weekly insights into Texas A&M football have gone unnoticed by blogs like Deadspin, EDSBS, and even their staunch Aggie supporters at Texas A&M and Baseball, which again adds to the mystery of how Franchoine, who is a well-known figure outside the blogosphere, managed to make a substantial living by blogging without neigh-required linking from other sources.
Joe Paterno was unavailable for a quirky comment that would reflect how old he is.

College football spans all 50 states (while quality college football is confined to about 14), so there’s a lot to digest, even for those just skimming box scores. This means plenty of stories are out of the eyes of the public. Here’s some of the more interesting from the first week of football, August 30th to September 3rd.

Rumor has it that Mike Leach has taken up drinking again. Not really because of that Insight Bowl comeback since he planned it all the way (though I needed a stiff one after that). No, it was because for the first time in 3 seasons, his team wasn’t 1st in passing, wasn’t 1st in scoring in the Big XII, and hadn’t scored 70 points in a game during the season.
Leach is not depressed, though. He has a slew of quarterbacks to choose from. Those prima donna wide receivers have finally graduated themselves off of his roster. His defense is poised to fall into the bottom of the NCAA, maybe even last again! No, Mike Leach has the world exactly where he wants it.

Last season the Texas Longhorns developed a dirty little secret: they’ve been suiting up cyborgs in football uniforms. Twenty lucky linemen and freshmen (we’re looking at you, Colt McCoy) have a new pre-game warm-up.
Mack Brown: The Matrix is everywhere, it is all around us. Even now, in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window, or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work, or when go to church or when you pay your taxes. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.
Colt: What truth?

Bob Stoops is looking forward to his 9th season as coach of Oklahoma and after last year’s debacles, is probably ready to get this thing started. The losses of Rhett Bomar, Adrian Peterson and against Oregon and Boise State made every fan find last year forgettable despite being the Big 12 champion. It also made them drunk - very drunk.
While Stoops’ appeal to ban trick plays has been denied, he still has much to look forward to this year. He leads a talented team versus a favorable schedule. Miami, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, and Missouri all come to Norman. But they still have the stigma of faltering in their bowl games. The Sooners have had their fair share of shit sandwiches the past 4 years and I heard from a good source “they are tired of eating shit.”

Now that you’ve got an idea on how to act with contempt should the glorious SEC choose your school, and how to have a marching band that won’t get you sanctions from the NCAA, now you have to choose a team name and mascot. Its tedious and very difficult, as there are probably people pushing you every which way. Here’s some tips to keep in mind:

NEW YORK - Joel Carey is your average, bandwagon sports fan in the Northeast. He sits on his hands every week of the fall at Giants Stadium, and last week traded in his Navy Blue Jeter jersey for a Royal Blue Reyes. A Pace graduate, Joel has never had a Division I-A college football team to call his own. Not to worry, though. For most of his adult life, he has followed the Miami Hurricanes. However, recently that fact has begun to change, causing a dangerous existential crisis that threatens the core of Carey’s very being. Read the rest of this entry »

I’ll admit it. When I first arrived at Texas Tech I didn’t know much about their football team. I grew up with Longhorns on my dad’s side and a bunch of crappy Ivy League schools on my mother’s. However, after my first Tech football game-a thrilling 200 to 175 win over rival New Mexico State Christian Tech-I became more interested in the high-scoring Red Raider offense.
Then, it happened. I was in my dorm room recovering from a hard night drinking with a beer bong of Coors. I flicked on my roommate’s TV to find an strange man talking about the football team. It wasn’t until a reporter yelled “Coach Leach! Coach Leach!” that I realized the true greatness of the Tech football team. Read the rest of this entry »
