Eighteen years ago, the biggest star in Camp Randall was Mike Leckrone, the University of Wisconsin’s band director. The legendary 5th Quarter was enough of an excuse for 30000 alumni and students to get drunk and watch a throttling by whichever Big 10 team was contractually obligated to make an appearance. Fed up with drunk alumni egging his house, Pat Richter calls then-Notre Dame defensive coordinator, Barry Alvarez, who leads the Badgers to an exciting 1-10 season. Then to two equally exciting 5-6 seasons, followed by a Rose Bowl win, which was also exciting.
Another defensive coordinator has taken the reigns. Bret Bielema, Barry’s defensive coordinator found the program in much better shape. Cruising to a 12-1 record, and getting rid of the dreaded Rule 3-2-5, Bielema’s quickly made a name for himself on the national stage. But, will he keep the ball rolling? Or will the losses of All-American tackle Joe Thomas and QB John Stocco’s 29-7 record be too much to overcome? Will Bret find true love in the arms of Vickie, or will Rachel steal him away yet again? Find out, in As the Football Turns!

July is a very antsy month in Columbus, Ohio, between the high temperatures and the realization that training camp is just a few short weeks away. Of course in Columbus college football never goes out of season, but at least at this point of the year there can be actual discussion of football rather than just musing over what-could-have-been the year before and spending lonely March evenings watching your well-worn DVD of the 2003 Fiesta Bowl (on Mute, of course).
If you think the Buckeyes’ failure in the BCS Championship game would dampen our spirits this season, you’re wrong. If anything, it makes Buckeye fans even more eager to get that taste of losing out of their mouths. Fortunately they open at home against the Fighting Penguins of Youngstown State. Morgan Freeman is gonna be pissed after this one.

You try to write in cursive after drinking that many beers…

At his weekly press conference, Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr has announced his intention of calling the Halfback Isolation play, more commonly referred to as ‘HB Iso.’ “I feel with the strength of running back Mike Hart and the overall strength of our offensive line, the half-back iso is a great play to run in order to gain between 2 and 5 yards on a consistent basis.”

Now that you’ve got an idea on how to act with contempt should the glorious SEC choose your school, and how to have a marching band that won’t get you sanctions from the NCAA, now you have to choose a team name and mascot. Its tedious and very difficult, as there are probably people pushing you every which way. Here’s some tips to keep in mind:

The month of May traditionally is the bearer of many annual events. Spring is in full bloom, NBA and NHL playoffs are winding up, and we all celebrate Cinco de Mayo. But, for hundreds of thousands of college students, the month of May is the month they finally unshackle themselves from Ramen noodles and all-night study sessions and receive their diploma, soon to begin their search for their career.
For some, that search is harder than others. For example, recent University of Wisconsin graduate John Stocco is finding his degree in agricultural journalism isn’t worth shit. “I can’t say that I expected to receive a job right out of the gate, but this is becoming very disheartening,” Stocco said. “I shoulda been business. My friend Joe (Thomas) found a job, and he found out he was hired when he was fishing.”
Stocco was invited to interview with an in-state athletic program, but he admits he went more for the experience of the hiring process. “When I got there, I saw the writing on the wall. I knew I wasn’t what they were looking for,” Stocco said regarding his application process.
His rejection letter confirms this. “While we found (John Stocco) to be highly qualified, we have decided not to hire anyone to fill the position.” said human resources manager Micheal McCarthy. “We wish you the best in your search for employment.”
While deterred, Stocco knows that he’ll find a job soon. “I’m already applying for a position in New York, and hopefully I’ll be able to work something out with that organization soon.”
Considering how Wisconsin has a lot more farmland than New York, that does not seem likely. University of Wisconsin Career Services advisor Marsha Goldwith offers this advice, “The majority of jobs filled are filled because of networking, and the world of agricultural journalism is no different. John should get in contact with his now-fellow alumni Ron Dayne, also an ag journalism major, and see if he knows of an opening in Texas for him.”

NEW YORK - Joel Carey is your average, bandwagon sports fan in the Northeast. He sits on his hands every week of the fall at Giants Stadium, and last week traded in his Navy Blue Jeter jersey for a Royal Blue Reyes. A Pace graduate, Joel has never had a Division I-A college football team to call his own. Not to worry, though. For most of his adult life, he has followed the Miami Hurricanes. However, recently that fact has begun to change, causing a dangerous existential crisis that threatens the core of Carey’s very being. Read the rest of this entry »

For those of you not in the know, the Fulmer Cup is an offseason award handed out by EDSBS to the team that spends its free time in the most productive ways. After compiling the all-time Fulmer Cup scoreboard, it became clear to us at H2DN that several schools are shockingly scoreless.

If what they’re doing in the preseason is any indication, Penn State will leave opposing teams battered, bruised, and bloodied. Already, any player on the offensive side has left unsuspecting defenses destroyed, dismantled, and unable to comprehend the destruction that they couldn’t prevent.
They were led in scoring by Anthony Scirrotto, who was tied with Chris Baker in putting up 11 points on a team - no, strike that - a group of people, because clearly the defendants had no organization in the attempt to repel the massacre. Read the rest of this entry »

In the midst of a rant about the BCS system, Notre Dame, and being disrespected, an emotional Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema broke down and started crying about his personal life, too.
“When you’re not married, you’ve got to kind of go to other people,” Bielema said.
Bielema’s plush office sits high above the grandstands at Camp Randall Stadium, with a panoramic view of the field. But yes, it sometimes gets a little lonely at the top. The coach is single and says he isn’t currently in a serious relationship.
“I’m pretty much trying to focus on the football team,” Bielema said. “I’m not saying it’s not available, or out there. But at this point, it’s very difficult, that side of my life. But also, probably because I’ve been stubborn in the past. I’ve had several multi-year relationships, and you know, when it comes time to put that little diamond ring on, I tend to get a little nervous.”
Since we can’t rewind time and watch a Sugar Bowl matchup that wasn’t terrible, we’ve done the next best thing - Bret Bielema, welcome to the Dating Game!
