Big 10 Head Coach 2006 Death Pool Results
Once again, Joe Paterno, the favorite at 7-2 odds, has continued to beat Death at his own game. While Paterno has survived, only 9 other coaches did as well. For those that liked the odds of 12-1 Terry Hoeppner, congratulations! You’ve taken Vegas’ age-old advice of ‘don’t bet against brain cancer’ to the metaphorical bank!
Can the Big 10 keep the 2-year streak of dead coaches, for lack of a better word, alive? What does Jim Delany have against former Miami of Ohio coaches? Does it have to be former head coaches, or will Jim Tressel be next?

Additional Notes - The Hoosiers have a bright spot: they lost only 6 starters, among the least in the conference. On the offensive side, Blake Powers, the rare QB - turned - TE may open up the Hoosiers offensively. Who doesn’t like the TE around where, instead of a 2-yard gain, he hucks it deep? EXCITING. Also, his last name is Powers, like that one Simpsons episode.
Defensively, there’s more evidence of a perennial Big 10 doormat: 7 games of 28+ points given up. 7 starters return, but with this kind of performance, how many would you want back? Tracy Porter is the lone bright spot, breaking up 8 passes and picking another 4, which averages to 1 really great play a game. That’s a state IU fans can get behind!
If you can write off at Wisconsin, Illinois, and Penn State as sure losses, their schedule is a great proving ground. Non-conference is the traditional 1-AA and MAC offerings you’ve come to expect from the Big 10. Conference features maybe-wins Minnesota, Purdue, at Northwestern and at Michigan State. Pick up the 4 non-conference wins and 2 of the aforementioned 4 conference foes, and this team’s going bowling. A lot rides on how quickly Lynch melds his team together. Out of all the new coaches, he’s the one with the right combination of returning talent and schedule that could see himself in a bowl game.
Fun Fact - I’ve posted a picture of the status of Indiana football. Can you find it?
