At his weekly press conference, Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr has announced his intention of calling the Halfback Isolation play, more commonly referred to as ‘HB Iso.’ “I feel with the strength of running back Mike Hart and the overall strength of our offensive line, the half-back iso is a great play to run in order to gain between 2 and 5 yards on a consistent basis.”
Carr continued, “The overall strength of Will Paul, our starting fullback, will also benefit our ability to run the halfback iso.
Coach Carr went on to explain that the HB Iso is traditionally run out of a ‘power’ formation. In it, the offensive line attempts to form a gap for the half- and full-back to run through. The full-back does not carry the ball, instead he attempts to isolate the middle linebacker, blocking his attempt to tackle the half-back, which is the one carrying the ball.
“I really feel that the use of the HB Iso will help lead the Michigan Wolverines to victory,” Carr stated. “Combining this play, along with a wide variety of other plays, will provide us with an advantage on Saturdays.”
When prompted, Coach Carr would not specify what other kinds of plays he would run, saying only that “they would all have the similar goal of helping the Michigan Wolverines win.”
